The Flatshare by Beth O’Leary – Snappy Review

B.O.A.S Rating – 4/5

Oh, wow. I didn’t think I would like this book as much as I did. From the cover’s introduction, ‘Tiffy and Leon share a bed. Tiffy and Leon have never met,’ I was a touch pessimistic. But Tiffy’s and Leon’s quirky story is just what I needed.

Stage left we have Tiffy, in her late 20s, living in London and earning a pittance. Throw in a possessive ex-boyfriend, Justin, who has dumped her once again. Poor Tiff is looking for a new place to leave but cannot afford the rent for a half-decent place.

Then there’s Leon. Our Leon is a kind, quiet, if not distant, hospice nurse, whose focus is his work and his brother Richie who’s unfortunately wound up in jail – albeit his innocence. He needs a few extra quids, so comes up with a plan that put’s his current girlfriend on edge; to let out his flat in the evenings as he works the night shift, and over the weekends when he’s away at Kay’s or his Ma’s.

So Tiffy and Leon, having never met but now sharing a bed, start a correspondence using…Post-Its! I think it was at this stage that I was sold on the book. And at the end, after delightful story telling through the eyes of our two main protagonists, I was left with such wonderful lingering questions…

Can you fall in love with someone you have never met and someone you’ve only know through writing? And can you really tell a lot about someone’s state of mind, and personality from their home and the bits of themselves they leave behind? I feel like those are such interesting ways to think about connection.

Really lovely book. Highly recommend it if you’re looking for something fun and romantic to read that isn’t filled with ‘quavers and trembles’!
