If I Could Name Myself…

Hey. Welcome to my blog. I am especially chuffed that you clicked on the About Me section. That you want to know more about the writer.

My name’s Damaris but if kids got to name themselves, I would have rebranded myself Dharma thanks to the hit show Dharma and Greg that aired back then. I thought Dharma was the coolest. A hippy, free-spirited, lively yoga instructor who kept her straight-collared husband Greg on his toes! Everything that a prepubescent me wanted to be.

That aside, my biggest and most consistent love has always been reading. I remember being seven or eight and getting Lady Bird books as a treat for being so brave at the doctor’s or dentist’s office. My book obsession therefore began with Mother Goose, moved to Thumbelina, Peter Pan and Toad of Toad Hall evolved to Enid Blyton’s, Nancy Drews then to classics like Dickens and Austen. And finally it is what it is today. All thanks to my Uncle Jim who in many ways shaped who I am today.

I think of him and my mind calls up things like drives home from school with stop-overs at Zuchinnis at ABC place, to get chocolate chip ice cream with strawberry syrup. To this day, I have not tasted anything that makes me water the way that ice-cream did.

Time passed and my love of books endured and then developed into a love for writing. I do most of my writing in my head (odd, yes, but I have an active manuscript running up there). What does make it out onto a medium, first lived in my original blog, Musings (soon to be available under ‘Old Blog’). And now it’s found a new home here.

I’m happy to say that there is so much more about me that I have not written or shared because I write mostly creative non-fiction. I tell stories about life and my experiences, the lessons, and people in it. I’ve started dabbling in poetry influenced by the writing workshops that Rupi Kaur’s runs. You’ll find a few of the not-so-dreadful pieces under the Poetry section. Under the Reviews section, you’ll find my ‘Snappy’ book reviews. I mark them snappy because one of these days I’m actually going to sit down and write a full commentary on a book.

My blog is called Born on a Saturday because….wait for it…I was born on a Saturday hahaha! Big whoop, right?! Jesting aside, I also choose the name because I thought it would be clever to have a new blog post out every Saturday. But mostly I called it Born on a Saturday because I attended a professional writing workshop where the co-instructor essentially shared that a name like ‘Musings’ a cliche. And I did not want to be a cliche. At least I thought I cared enough about other people’s opinions to want to seen as original. Good news is that I have grown to like the name, just like I grew to accept the name Damaris.

Who is this blog for?

It’s for anyone who appreciates humour and honesty. Anyone who finds the human experiences that we collectively share remarkable in its similarities. Anyone who doesn’t find the idea of reading the musings of a 30-something woman insanely boring…to you, I say welcome!
