B.O.A.S Rating – 3/5
What a year this week has been? ๐ Honestly! It feels like we’ve been wading through a swamp and taken months to reach the bank. I even forgot to post the February book club read, but here we go!
Children of Virtue and Vengeance is the sequel to Children of Blood and Bone. After our book club read the latter, it was obvious we’d have to read the second book soon as it was released! The story picks up the story after the main characters’ (Zelie, Amari & Tzain) success in returning magic to Orisha. The story is full of twists. Some predictable, like the survival of Inan, and others are really clever…I’ll leave those for whoever feels inspired to pick up a copy.
Tomi Adeyemi has created a colourful world, full of fantastic creatures, powers, and people. Set in Nigeria, the magical realm she’s span reads a lot like Rowling’s Hogwarts. However, the sheer number of the characters in the book does take away a little from the story. I had a hard time keeping up with all the clan elders, their powers and their smaller side stories. Yet somehow, in the midst of the congestion of characters, I still felt that Roen’s story was left unexplored. By the end of the book, you know little more of him than you did in COBB. Such a shame
The pace of the story also felt overstretched. I dare say that the entire book could have been condensed to half its size if some of the superfluous details were omitted.
Now, I know all the above sounds negative, but I did enjoy the book. The fact that there is a third title expected sometime next year is exciting. Perhaps we will finally get the resolution we so desperately want!
